2010-05-07

Beauty Service Workers' Trade Union have managed through a court reduce 500 Litas fine for one hairdresser to a warning.

According to the trade union chairwoman Ilona Sutkevičiūtė, people are trying to avoid taxes and better work illegally.

"Tax Inspection officials found in one Kaunas hair salon four hairdressers working without a business license - Sutkevičiūtė remembers the beginning of story. - One of them got a fine of 500 Litas, the others - few hundreds of Litas. The woman went to the Tax Inspectorate branch and discovered that according to penalty “article” a fine is 200 Litas, but a document stating the amount due stated 500 Litas. It is difficult to say whether this was a mistake, or people are caught as illiterate."

The hairdresser then appealed to the trade unions, the papers were prepared and brought to court. On April 29 at the hearing a woman, who was without a business license received a warning.

"I am in no way saying that you do not pay state taxes, - assures Beauty service workers trade union chairwoman. - I hope that this hairdresser will acquire a business license”.

The organization intends to turn to parliament with a proposal how to reduce the shadow economy scale: "We need to reduce taxes so that people would be able to afford to pay them, but very substantially increase the penalties for non-payment. Then people will know that without paying tax, will loose pants "- I. Sutkevičiūtė commented the idea.

She hopes that this will encourage workers to be more responsible before the state and their clients. Thus, the trade union defends the beauty service clients. "There are funny cases, when the inspectors arrive to check the place, and the hairdressers run away, leaving the client with a semi-colored hair“ - said chairwoman of the union.

However, according to Ilona Sutkevičiūtė, happens that sometimes get caught also honest tax paying workers and trade union members "forget" to ask for help. "One of the Kaunas bazaar vendor (he is also the chairman of the trade union). During the inspection of workplace he had no document at work, showing the legality of work - tells another story trade unionist. - The next day he presented the document to the appropriate institution, but still received a fine of 500 Litas. As a trade unionist he did not apply to me. Perhaps after consultations with lawyers we have been able to help him, - regret I.Sutkevičiūtė.

Beauty services workers and Kaunas Traders organizations are affiliates of Lithuanian service workers trade union.
