Trade union rushes to the aid of legendary “Žalgiris” players

2009-11-23

There are plenty of activities for young, only a few months ago founded athletes' (sportsman) union: web page is under construction, interacting with athletes. Recently union has interested in a situation of Vilnius football club “Žalgiris”, which has outstanding debt of about one million litas to the players.

On 18 November Lithuanian service sector workers' trade union chairman Aleksandras Posochovas, lawyer Nerijus Kasiliauskas athletes and union vice-chairman Aleksandras Čiulanovas together with the football players were looking for ways to regain amounts signed in contracts.

The legendary team, whose owner is sentenced to prison, barely survives; its debt reached around 3 million litas. According to N. Kasiliauskas, this situation could continue for at least ten years, but in order to recover the money, and maybe even to save the historic "Žalgiris" team it is necessary to take any action. The best solution - to initiate bankruptcy proceedings. This requires that one or more players initiate the case.

Athletes’ union intends to apply to the Lithuanian Football Federation and FIFA (Federation of International Football Associations). Most of the players are currently playing in other teams.
